Pondicherry is a peaceful and picturesque India tours destination. Tourists from across the globe come here to spend pleasurable holidays. The culture of this destination is an attraction in itself. Known as ‘The French Riviera of the East’, Pondicherry or ‘Puducherry’ is one of the famous Union Territories in the southern part of India. Pondicherry is located in the Coromandel Coast facing the Bay of Bengal. It also happens to be the spiritual home of Sri Aurobindo and Mother. This distinct mix of geography, history and spiritualism makes pondicherry one of the most delightful destinations in South India. (Check our South India Tour Details for Tamil Nadu and Kerala.)

The French ruled this territory for 300 years, and today, it stands as a living monument of the French culture in India.

One of the most enticing things about Pondicherry is eating out. The menus include commendable French cuisine almost as good as the authentic fare, along with the usual Indian food. All these are available in beautiful ambience and a reasonable price.

Arikamedu is a beautiful destination in Pondicherry. which has wide array of remnants which include signs of trade with Romans, wine jars and ancient Roman coins. It is also, one of the prime attractions in Pondicherry.

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, or Society, was recognized by the Indian guru Sri Aurobindo in 1926, situated very close to the Bay of Bengal. This ashram is one of the places where a spiritual wanderer must definitely visit. The ashram is very close to the Manakkulvinayagar temple. The aim of Sri Aurobindo’s teaching is to transcend human nature to achieve divine life.

Auroville “The City of Dawn”,
is planned for 50,000 inhabitants. It is located on a low-lying plateau a few kilometres north of Puducherry. It was on 28th February 1968 when youth representing 128 countries and all Indian States placed earth from their native places in an urn symbolizing the creation of a city dedicated to human unity and international understanding. Since then Aurovillians have been working tirelessly to realize the idea set by The Mother of a city that will manifest human unity in diversity, a testing ground and laboratory for the next step in human evolution.

Pondicherry does not have any airport. Chennai is the nearest from Pondicherry, which is situation at the distance of 135 kilometers from Pondicherry. Pondicherry railway station is connneted with the nearest railway station, Villupuram meter gauge railway line. This is located at the distance of 36 kilometers from Chennai. Pondicherry is well connected through roadways also.

Festivals of Pondicherry differ from the rest of India, for the French influence still persists prominently here. Masquerade, held in March – April, is a popular mask festival, during which brilliantly costumed and masked people of Pondicherry, dance down the streets to the music of trumpets and accordions.
